Hematology / Surgery Update

A couple of weeks ago we went to the Hematologist to get another set of blood labs done to make sure that Dane would be able to have surgery. For those of you that do not remember or know, he was not able to get circumcised at the hospital when he was born because when they started to cut he would not stop bleeding. Since the surgery is not necessary they would not proceed. We went to the Hematologist a couple months later and the tests came back perfectly normal but they wanted to see him one more time before the actual surgery just to run more tests and make sure that his blood was still normal. Well this last visit had an alarming result so they ran additional tests and they were fine. The doctor asked if we would bring him in again because the surgeon would not do the surgery based on the results they found. We took him back last week and had another set of tests run and again a different test came back abnormal. Basically they do not know whether or not he has a blood problem. The doctor said that it is not uncommon for the tests to fluctuate like this but the combination of the tests and his previous experience of not clotting makes him uneasy for Dane to have surgery right now. The tests indicate that he has low proteins in his blood therefore it may not clot. There is a good chance that he is perfectly fine but we don't want to take the chance for something that is not urgent. If we have to they can provide him with some medication to make his blood clot to get him through the surgery but we are not at that point yet. The doctor suggested that we give it another month or two and then bring him back for more tests. Hopefully those tests will be normal and we can get this over with. It is awful taking him in and watching them take 4 tubes of blood. They usually have to stick him 3 to 4 times and he just screams and screams. The last visit they finally quit fishing in his arm after the 4th time and they called the vascular unit so I am going to insist that they come down next time too. Our next appointment is scheduled for the first week of August.
